Swire's map captures Liverpool at the cusp of its change from a town into a city. The view is from the Mersey, putting the docks right in front of the viewer.

To the north (on the left) the Leeds-Liverpool Canal snakes across fields until it arrives at Old Hall Street. This area is still romantically rural, if only for Love Lane North which is marked.

Everton, Edge Hill and Toxteth Park skirt the boundaries, and the shape of Everton village is easy to see. There are new housing estates for the rich growing up east of Crown Street, as well as at 'Windsor' (near the top of Upper Parliament Street) and Abercromby Square (now the University area).

It's a highly decorated map, and because of that it's perfect for framing. There's a handy list of locations as numbered on the map (mostly chapels and churches but also swimming baths, libraries and other public services).

There's also the seal of the Corporation of Liverpool, the forerunner to the city council, and a miniature historical 'Mapp of Leverpoole 1720' as comparison.

District boundaries, the docks themselves, and some major landmarks are labelled directly, making this old map of Liverpool perfect for getting the lie of the land for the early 19th century.
